Title: In the Unlikely Event
Author: Judy Blume
Published: May 3rd, 2016
Judy Blume is a well-known author and has written some of our favourite novels including Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret and Summer Sisters to name a few. Blume was born and raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey which is where her latest novel In the Unlikely Event takes place. The plane crashes that take place in this novel are based on real life events that Judy Blume witnessed as a teenager in her hometown of Elizabeth.
Is it a coincidence that three accidents (literally) hit the town of Elizabeth, New Jersey one after the other? Our main character, a fifteen-year-old girl named Miri Ammerman doesn’t think so. In fact, most of the boys at her school are somehow convinced aliens are involved with the plane crashes that hit Miri’s hometown in quick succession. Almost forty years later, she returns to Elizabeth to honor the lives that were lost the day of the plane crashes and commemorate the worst year of her life.
Who was my favourite character and why?
Irene Ammerman (Our main character’s grandmother) was my favourite character because she was a relatable and interesting character. Irene had a good sense of humor and added another layer to this novel. Not only were there Miri Ammerman and her mother, but Irene was also included in this novel which included another generation and a bit of complexity to the book.
Were the characters relatable and/or believable?
Absolutely! Although this book was set back in the 50’s at the beginning of the novel, the characters are well developed and experience everyday events, as well as extenuating circumstances, in a realistic manner. The character also had a great back story which Judy Blume was able to incorporate into the novel seamlessly.
Did the story keep you on the edge of your seat?
This story was a page turner! There was such a large number of characters, back stories, and connections between characters that this book was difficult to put down. I would definitely recommend picking it up.
Something I would change about the novel?
Nothing I loved it! Just keep in mind that you have to be alert when starting this novel because there are an abundant amount of characters introduced in the first 50 or so pages.
Judy Blume has done it again! She takes the reader on a vivid ride through catastrophe, love, heartbreak, friendship, and the power of family.
I would give this novel 4 out of 5 tea mugs, a must novel as summer comes to an end.
